In 2007 the Industry Skills Councils (ISC) released a Core Skills for Business booklet detailing the extraordinary low levels of literacy and numeracy skills across Australia.
Research by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) revealed that by raising a country’s adult literacy by just 1 per cent leads to a rise in productivity of 2.5 per cent and a 1.5 percent rise in GDP.
In Australia this could deliver more than $11.5billion a year!
The Australian government has established language, literacy, and numeracy as a priority through the Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) Program. This program is designed to assist industry to grow and improve the skills of their people, now and in the future.
